Training for a 10K: First Group Run

I am going to be a runner!

That is the thought I woke up with this morning. An hour later, I got in my friend's car, all dressed up in my fabulous athletic attire and extremely excited. I was on the way to my first official group run! A  crowd was gathering up in the city's largest park to get ready for a marathon. Well, some for the half-marathon. And some (namely, me), were there not quite sure whether they are ready for a 5K, 10K or would rather sit on the couch and watch the run on TV.

The collective warm-up was definitely fun. My friend was pushing her sister's stroller and doing the dynamic warm-up exercises at the same time. Her brother ran with that stroller the whole 4.6 km of the way. Their other siblings and relatives ran, cycled and sat on older runners shoulders, depending on their age, weight and mood. In short, I was  right in the middle of a very athletic family gathering. How could one not feel inspired?

Really, how could one not feel inspired when the head of that family completely denied a possibility of me running one of the short laps? That's how I got sucked into a dreadfully painful and absolutely amazing 4.6 km run. I could not run it without stopping but I did get through the biggest part of it without having to walk. If I had pushed myself harder, if I had remembered to tell myself that my mind is the only thing that "can't"... well, who knows.

We will be meeting there next Sunday to run again. My goal is to be able to keep up with my friend and her mom the Sunday after this one. With a little forest not so far away from my home, it might just come true. As for the 10K thing, I'll do my best. Run intervals, tempo runs, whatever. If it doesn't work out, the 5K will be easy enough. The point here is that after each run I feel amazing. And that's the most important thing.
